INTO THE DEPTH

History, Philosophy & Practice of Ashtanga Yoga

Explore the roots and essence of Yoga Cikitsā

This six-month immersion program is designed for those seeking to deepen their understanding of Ashtanga Yoga beyond its physical aspects. With a strong emphasis on history, philosophy, and energetic awareness, this course provides an opportunity to refine both theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Who is this program for?

This intensive course is intended for dedicated practitioners and teachers, who wish to:

  • Expand their knowledge of yogic philosophy and history
  • Develop a stronger foundation in alignment, breath, and subtle energy
  • Integrate their practice into their life
  • Engage in a structured, long-term study with guidance and mentorship

Learn Yoga Philosophy, History, and subtle body studies:

This in-depth study program is structured into two main components: theory and practice.

  • The theoretical exploration invites us to dive into the philosophical and historical roots of yoga. We will uncover the wisdom of ancient texts, the essence of Indian philosophical traditions, and the teachings of Patanjali, as well as the subtle body. This is an opportunity to nurture a deeper connection to yoga beyond the physical practice.

  • The practical component is centered around the Mysore-style practice of the Primary Series (yoga cikitsā). Asana clinics will offer exploration to refine postures, prevent injuries, and enhance body awareness. This experiential approach ensures that theoretical knowledge is directly integrated into personal practice, fostering a deeper and more mindful connection with the body and breath.

Philosophical Foundations:

  • The roots of Yoga
  • Indian philosophical traditions & texts (Śrutis and Smṛtis)
  • The Ṣaḍ Darśanas
  • Advaita Vedanta, Sāṅkhya, and Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras as foundational frameworks

Energetic and Subtle Body Exploration:

  • The three bodies (Śarīras) and five sheaths (Pañca Kośas)
  • The mind’s structure: Antaḥkaraṇa
  • Haṭha Yoga principles: Nāḍīs, Granthis, and Cakras
  • The interplay of Prāṇa and Apāna in breath and movement

Asana, Breath, and Vinyasa:

  • A detailed exploration of the Primary Series (yoga cikitsā)
  • Mysore-style practice as the foundation for self-exploration
  • Tristana method and Sanskrit count for precise execution
  • Exploration of bandhas and breath, deepening body awareness

We have carefully curated the bibliography to include classical texts, modern scholarship, and practical guides to deepen the understanding of Ashtanga Yoga’s philosophy, history, and practice. It provides essential resources for exploring its roots, evolution, and application while maintaining a critical awareness of its cultural and post-colonial dimensions.
